In this workshop there will be a simple demo on lighting the green screen, and then step-by-step instructions on how to get your footage from Final Cut Pro into Adobe AfterEffects to remove the green and replace it with another background.
The Blue Studio is in the Auditorium building—not the big doors that lead to the place where we had Art History lectures in freshman year. It’s the other door on that same building, kind of in between the big doors and the RISD store. When you walk in, go through the doorway on your right and then go up the set of mini-stairs and there’s a room, that’s the Blue Studio.
If anyone has trouble finding the space they can call me at 917-334-4944.

- Location: ID Gallery of 161 South Main (ID Building)
-
Time: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
- Capacity: 25
- Materials: (optional) If you would like to make your own, please bring your own assorted screwdrivers, tape, a drawing tablet (Intuous 3 or 4 preferred), and an old PC laptop (Craigslist is a great place to find one for cheap!)
Ever wanted a Cintiq tablet that lets you draw directly on screen? Don’t want to pay an arm and a leg? Make your own! It takes less than 30 minutes!
This workshop will tell you how to fashion your own Cintiq style tablet out of an old laptop and a drawing tablet. You won’t even have to take your tablet apart! Your laptop will be hacked to bits though! There will be a presentation about the basic concept, and also a live demo showing you how to make the tablet and configure it. There will also be time for people to attempt their own and receive assistance on doing so. Bring your own screwdrivers! Tape will be provided.
You don’t have to bring anything to attend, but if you would like to make your own on the spot, please bring the suggested materials!
Little to no electronics experience is required. There will be no soldering or cable connecting involved. You may be surprised at how simple this actually was to make!

This workshop will be an introduction to the two programs. Students will begin to familiarize themselves with the interface, learn what the tools do, understand applications, learn shortcuts, and begin to be confident in using this software in their work. The last part of the class will be dedicated to questions regarding specific types of applications that the students would like to understand. This will either be a form of question and answer or I will provide a few examples of useful applications that aren’t necessarily book-making or digital illustration (how to present work cleanly for example).
This is NOT an illustration course or a typography course (though I am happy to answer any/all typographic and layout questions).

Google Sketchup + Kerkythea rendering engine workshop – a two part series. Simple, efficient 3d modeling for architecture and design.
This workshop will be taught in two separate sessions.
Google Sketchup is a uniquely simple and efficient 3d modeling tool. Quickly create, manipulate and translate your designs. This workshop will give an understanding of the basic principles through more advanced modeling techniques. Kerkythea rendering engine is a quick and powerful renderer that interacts easily with sketchup. The project will be based around the modeling of Mies Van Der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion, which should encompass most of the technique necessary to understand sketchup. The first session is for people completely new to sketchup, or who would like a review. The second session will be more advanced and people with a basic knowledge of sketchup could attend this without the first session.
Session 1 – basic principles. Orientation with interface, navigation and tools. Introduction to 3d modeling concepts. Interaction with CAD and other software platforms. Begin building the barcelona pavilion learning how to organize the model in terms of geometry, layers, and efficient modeling techniques. At the end of this session, people planning to attend the second session can request topics to be covered in the second session.
Session 2 – The 3d model of the pavilion will be completed. Any requested topics from the previous session will be covered. After completing the pavilion, a few more techniques will be discussed that are more complex. Following that the rendering process will begin, giving a basic introduction to kerkythea and rendering systems. The final output will be a completed 3d model and several rendering iterations.
If there are any specific requests for information to be covered – please contact the instructor via email.

A demo on some quick and easy special effects and theatrical makeup you can do yourself!
